Buying cattle in Terrat

Im vergangenen Jahr fiel im Massailand ab Mitte Mai bis über das Jahresende hinaus kein Regen. Unter dieser ausgesprochen langen Dürreperiode und zeitweise grossen Hitze hatten die Rinderherden der Massai enorm zu leiden. Dies führte ab Ende November zu einem grossen Viehsterben. Einheimischen Medienberichten zu Folge wurde geschätzt, dass im ganzen Simanjiro-Distrikt über 150 000 Rinder und dabei insbesondere eine grosse Anzahl der frisch geborenen Kälber verendeten. Aufgrund dieser Dürresituation wurden in der 2. Jahreshälfte 2021 auch keine neuen Rinder für das Projekt von Roger’s Kuhherde dazugekauft. Erst ab Mitte Januar gab es nun endlich die ersten grossen und ergiebigen Niederschläge, so dass in der Folge erstes frisches Steppengras im Massailand nachwachsen konnte. Aufgrund des Futterangebotes konnten sich die ausgemergelten Rinder der Massai nun ganz allmählich wieder etwas erholen. Seit Anfang Februar gibt es auf den lokalen Märkten im Massailand auch wieder erste gesunde Rinder zu kaufen. Dank der vom Vorjahr übertragenen Spenden und weiteren, sehr grosszügigen Spendeneinnahmen vor Ort, konnten wir diese Woche auf dem Viehmarkt in Terrat zu relativ günstigen Preisen insgesamt mehr als 10 junge weibliche Rinder für das Projekt von Roger’s Kuhherde dazu kaufen. Wir sind zuversichtlich, dass es im Februar weitere Niederschläge geben wird und sich somit auch das Futterangebot für die Viehherden laufend verbessern wird. Mit dem längerfristig gesicherten Futterangebot werden auch die Viehpreise weiter steigen. Das schlimmste der vergangenen Dürrekatastrophe scheint momentan überstanden zu sein und wir sind glücklich, dass wir unter idealen Konditionen neue junge Rinder für Roger’s Kuhherde dazu kaufen konnten. Diese Rinder werden nach einer kurzen Quarantänezeit nun schon bald an bedürftige Massaifamilien abgeben…
Buying cattle in Terrat
There was no rain in Maasailand from mid-May until well after the end of last year. The Maasai herds of cattle suffered enormously from this extremely long period of drought and great heat. From the end of November this led to a large number of cattle dying. According to local media reports, it was estimated that more than 150,000 cattle died in the Simanjiro district, and in particular a large number of the newly born calves. Due to this drought situation, no additional cattle were bought for the Roger’s cow herd project in the second half of 2021. It was not until mid-January that the first heavy rainfall finally came, so that the first fresh steppe grass was able to grow back in Maasailand. Because of the food available, the emaciated Maasai cattle were gradually able to recover., It is possible to buy healthy cattle again at the local markets in Maasailand since the beginning of February. Thanks to the donations carried over from the previous year and other, very generous local donations, we were able to buy more than 10 young female cattle for Roger’s cow herd project at the cattle market in Terrat at reasonable prices this week. We are confident that there will be more precipitation in February and that the supply of fodder for the herds of cattle will therefore constantly improve. With the long-term secured supply of fodder, cattle prices will also continue to rise. The worst of the past drought catastrophe seems to be over and we are happy that we were able to buy new young cattle for Roger’s cow herd under ideal conditions. After a short quarantine period, these cattle will soon be handed over to needy Maasai families…
Kununua ng’ombe huko Terrat
Hakukuwa na mvua Maasailand kuanzia katikati ya Mei hadi mwishoni mwa mwaka jana. Ng’ombe wa Wamasai waliteseka sana kutokana na kipindi hiki kirefu cha ukame na joto kali. Kuanzia mwisho wa Novemba hii ilisababisha idadi kubwa ya ng’ombe kufa. Kwa mujibu wa taarifa za vyombo vya habari nchini humo, ilikadiriwa kuwa zaidi ya ng’ombe 150,000 walikufa katika wilaya ya Simanjiro, na hasa idadi kubwa ya ndama waliozaliwa hivi karibuni. Kutokana na hali hii ya ukame, hakuna ng’ombe wa ziada walionunuliwa kwa ajili ya mradi wa ng’ombe wa Roger mwaka 2021. Haikuwa hadi katikati ya Januari ambapo mvua kubwa silianza kunyesha, hivyo nyasi ziliweza kuota tena huko Masailand. Kwa sababu ya chakula kilichopatikana, ng’ombe wa Kimasai waliodhoofika waliweza kupona hatua kwa hatua, Inawezekana kununua ng’ombe wenye afya nzuri tena kwenye masoko ya kimasai tangu mwanzoni mwa Februari. Shukrani kwa michango iliyotolewa mwaka uliopita na michango mingine mikubwa ya ndani, tuliweza kununua zaidi ya ng’ombe jike kumi (10) kwa ajili ya mradi wa ng’ombe wa Roger katika soko la ng’ombe huko Terrat kwa bei nzuri wiki hii. Tuna uhakika kwamba kutakuwa na mvua zaidi mwezi wa Februari na kwamba usambazaji wa malisho kwa makundi ya ng’ombe utaboreka kila mara. Pamoja na upatikanaji wa malisho ya muda mrefu, bei ya ng’ombe pia itaendelea kupanda.
