Renovation of the drinking trough in Olekitejo started

Die alte Viehtränke Olekitejo liegt im südlichen Teil des Gemeindegebietes von Loiborsoit im Ortsteil Engarkash B ungefähr in der Mitte zwischen den Dorfzentren Emboret und Loiborsoit. Ältere Massai aus Loiborsoit berichten, dass das Bohrloch dieser Viehtränke bereits in den 1960er Jahren existierte. Diese Viehtränke hat für die Massai also seit geraumer Zeit eine enorme Bedeutung. Angeblich sei die Viehtränke von der damaligen Regierung als Ersatz konzipiert und ausgebaut worden, nachdem die Simanjiro-Massai seit der Gründung des Tarangire-Nationalparkes im Jahre 1970 ihre Viehherden in Dürrezeiten nicht mehr an den, in der Mitte im Nationalpark fliessenden, ständig Wasser führenden Tarangire-River (Siloha) treiben durften. Die temporär sogar mit Solarenergie und neuerdings mehrheitlich wieder mit einem Dieselgenerator betriebene Viehtränke wurde über die Jahrzehnte immer wieder notdürftig saniert. Die Viehtränke ist jedoch seit längerer Zeit in einem ziemlich desolaten Zustand, so dass eine Totalsanierung unumgänglich geworden ist. Im August 2021 wurde nur wenige Kilometer von Olekitejo entfernt, in Orkitejo der neue fast gleichnamige Brunnen inkl. Viehtränke in Betrieb genommen. In diesem Zusammenhang konnte die dringend notwendige Sanierung der alten Viehtränke in Olekitejo erstmals konkretisiert und näher ins Auge gefasst werden. Ursprünglich sollte diese Sanierung in Absprache und mit Unterstützung durch die Distriktregierung während der grossen Masika-Regenzeit (im Aril/Mai) gestartet und auch der neue Brunnen in Orkitejo weiter ausgebaut werden. Die diesjährige Masika-Regenzeit endete leider bereits Anfang Mai abrupt ohne sehr ergiebige Niederschläge. Aufgrund der wenigen Niederschläge zeichnet sich im ganzen Simajiro-Distrikt leider erneut eine bedrohliche Dürre ab. Daher kann mit der Brunnensanierung nicht weiter zugewartet werden. Dank der grossartigen Unterstützung eines Hauptsponsors, welcher anonym bleiben möchte, ist zumindest die Brunnensanierung in Olekitejo finanziell zu einem grossen Teil mit bereits aus dem Vorjahr übertragenen Spenden für gemeinnützige Projekte gesichert. Daher konnten in Zusammenhang mit den laufenden Schulbauprojekten bereits im Mai und nun erneut Anfang Juni die ersten Baumaterialien wie Blocksteine, Zement und Armierungseisen nach Olekitejo transportiert werden. Zwischenzeitlich wurde das alte, sehr desolate Pumphäuschen abgerissen. Es wird darauf geachtet, dass während den ganzen Sanierungsarbeiten die Wasserpumpe nur für kurze Zeit ausser Betrieb genommen werden muss. Bei der Sanierung sollen Zuleitungsrohre ersetzt sowie neue Wassertröge für das Vieh und etwas abseits eine zusätzliche Station mit Hahnen für den Trinkwasserbezug installiert werden. Ebenso soll ein neues Haus für den Brunnenwärter inkl. eine kleine Werkstatt für einfache Unterhaltsarbeiten erstellt werden. Sofern eine finanzielle Beteiligung durch die Distriktregierung und/oder der einheimischen Bevölkerung zu Stande kommt, möchten wir in Zusammenhang mit der Brunnensanierung den neuen Brunnen in Orkitejo weiter ausbauen und auch dort das Pumphäuschen sowie das temporär errichtete Häuschen für den Brunnenwärter durch solide Gebäude aus Zementblocksteinen ersetzen. Zusammen mit der Massaibevölkerung hoffen wir vor allem, dass die momentane Dürrezeit nicht allzu lange andauern wird und dass die geplante Totalsanierung der Viehtränke in Olekitejo plangemäss und ohne grosse Unterbrüche rechtzeitig abgeschlossen werden kann. Renovation of the drinking trough in Olekitejo started
The old cattle trough Olekitejo is located in the southern part of the municipality of Loiborsoit in the Engarkash B district, approximately halfway between the village centers of Emboret and Loiborsoit. Elderly Maasai from Loiborsoit report that the borehole for this cattle trough already existed in the 1960s. This drinking trough has been of enormous importance to the Maasai for some time. The cattle trough was supposedly designed and expanded by the government at the time as a compensation for Simanjiro Maasai. Since the founding of the Tarangire National Park in 1970 they were refused to feed their herds of cattle to the constantly flowing water of the Tarangire River (Siloha). The cattle trough, which was temporarily even powered by solar energy and more recently mostly by a diesel generator, has been repeatedly renovated over the decades. However, the cattle trough has been in a rather desolate condition for a long time, so that a total renovation has become unavoidable. In August 2021, a new well including a drinking trough with a similar name, was put into operation in Orkitejo , just a few kilometers from Olekitejo. In this context, the urgently needed renovation of the old drinking trough in Olekitejo could be specified and considered in more detail for the first time. Originally, this renovation was to be started in consultation and with the support of the district government during the long Masika rainy season (in Aril/May) and the new well in Orkitejo was to be further expanded. Unfortunately, this year’s Masika rainy season ended abruptly at the beginning of May without very heavy rainfall since then. Due to the little rainfall, a threatening drought is once again looming in the entire Simajiro district. Therefore, we cannot wait any longer with the well renovation. Thanks to the great support of a main sponsor, who wishes to remain anonymous, at least the well renovation in Olekitejo is financially secured to a large extent with donations for charitable projects carried over from the last year’s budget. Therefore, in connection with the ongoing school construction projects, the first building materials such as blocks, cement and reinforcing iron could be transported to Olekitejo in May and at the beginning of June. In the meantime, the old, very desolate pump house has been demolished. Care is taken to ensure that the water pump only has to be shut down for a short time during the entire renovation work. During the renovation, supply pipes are to be replaced and new water troughs for the cattle are to be installed, as well as an additional station with taps for drinking water supply. A new house for the well keeper, including a small workshop for simple maintenance work, is also to be built. If there is a financial contribution from the district government and/or the local population, we would like to further expand the new well in Orkitejo in connection with the well renovation and also the pump house and the temporarily built house for the well keeper by solid cement block buildings. Together with the Maasai population, we hope above all that the current drought will not last too long and that the planned renovation of the cattle trough in Olekitejo can be completed on time and without major interruptions.
