Die Rinderherden der Massai im Simanjiro-Distrikt hatten auch im vergangenen Jahr erneut unter einer langen Dürreperiode zu leiden. Erst gegen Ende Dezember brachten die ersten ergiebigen Niederschläge etwas Linderung, als spärlich frisches Steppengras nachwachsen konnte. Weitere nennenswerte Niederschläge blieben seither leider aus. Wegen dieser erneuten Trockenheit ist es zurzeit weiterhin enorm schwierig, neue gesunde Rinder für das Projekt von Roger’s Kuhherde auf den lokalen Viehmärkten im Massailand zu kaufen. Unser Vorstandsmitglied und Projektverantwortliche Roger F., der zurzeit im Rahmen eines privaten Urlaubs im Massailand weilt, hat sich daher vorletzte Woche dazu entschieden, mit einem kleinen Teil der vom Vorjahr übertragenen Spenden für das Projekt anstelle von jungen Rindern, einige Ziegen auf dem Markt von Emboret zu kaufen. Diese neu erworbenen Ziegen wurden an bedürftige Massaifamilien und Patenkinder abgegeben. Im Gegensatz zu den Rindern kommen die Ziegen mit der momentan herrschenden Trockenheit besser zurecht und können auch bei spärlichem Graswuchs in der Steppe besser überleben. Obschon es momentan nicht absehbar ist, wie lange die Trockenheit noch andauern wird, hoffen wir zusammen mit all unseren Massaifreunden, dass die nächste Masika-Regenzeit (März – Mai) schon bald einsetzen wird und neue ergiebige Niederschläge die Massaisteppe wieder in ein grünes Paradies verwandeln werden und somit dann endlich wieder ein ausreichendes Futterangebot für die Viehherden der Massai zur Verfügung steht…
Buying goats at the market in Emboret
The cattle herds of the Maasai in the Simanjiro district suffered from a long drought last year again. Only towards the end of December did the first heavy rainfall bring some relief, when sparse fresh steppe grass was able to grow back. Unfortunately, there has been no further significant precipitation since then. Because of this ongoing drought, it is currently still extremely difficult to buy new healthy cattle for the Roger’s cow herd project at the local cattle markets in Maasailand. Our board member and project manager Roger F., who is currently on a private holiday in Maasailand, therefore decided to purchase some goats instead of young cattle on the market in Emboret. For this, he used a small part of the donations for the project that was carried over from the previous year. The newly acquired goats were given to needy Maasai families and godchildren. In contrast to the cattle, the goats cope better with the currently prevailing drought and can survive better even with sparse grass growth in the steppes. Although it is currently not foreseeable how long the drought will last, we hope together with all our Maasai friends that the next Masika rainy season (March – May) will start soon. Kununua mbuzi kama soko huko Emboret
Ng’ombe wa Wamasai wilayani Simanjiro walikumbwa na ukame wa muda mrefu mwaka jana tena. Kuelekea mwisho wa Desemba tu ndipo mvua kubwa ya kwanza ilileta ahueni, wakati nyasi mbichi za nyika ziliweza kuota tena. Kwa bahati mbaya, hakujawa na mvua kubwa zaidi tangu wakati huo. Kwa sababu ya ukame huu unaoendelea, kwa sasa bado ni vigumu sana kununua ng’ombe wapya wenye afya bora kwa ajili ya mradi wa ng’ombe wa Roger katika soko la ndani la ng’ombe huko Maasailand. Mwanachama wetu wa bodi na meneja wa mradi Roger F., ambaye kwa sasa yuko katika likizo ya kibinafsi huko Maasailand, kwa hivyo aliamua kununua mbuzi badala ya ng’ombe wachanga sokoni huko Emboret. Kwa hili, alitumia sehemu ndogo ya michango kwa ajili ya mradi ambao ulifanywa kutoka mwaka uliopita. Mbuzi waliopatikana hivi karibuni walipewa familia na watoto wa miungu wa Kimasai. Tofauti na ng’ombe, mbuzi hustahimili ukame uliopo hivi sasa na wanaweza kuishi vyema hata kwa ukuaji wa nyasi chache kwenye nyika. Ijapokuwa kwa sasa haionekani ukame utaendelea kwa muda gani, tunatumai pamoja na marafiki zetu wote wa Kimasai kwamba msimu ujao wa mvua wa Masika (Machi – Mei) utaanza hivi karibuni. Mvua mpya kubwa ibadilishe nyika ya Wamasai kuwa paradiso ya kijani kibichi na hivyo hatimaye lishe ya kutosha kwa mifugo ya Wamasai itapatikana tena…
