Storm event in Loiborsoit

Am Donnerstagabend tobte ein aussergewöhnliches Unwetter unweit des Dorfzentrums von Loiborsoit und seiner näheren Umgebung. Dieses war von Sturmböen, Starkregen und heftigem Hagel begleitet und hinterliess eine Schneise der Zerstörung. Dabei brachen unzählige, auch grössere Bäume oder wurden komplett entwurzelt. Auch etliche Häuser, welche nur ein einfaches, nicht stabiles Blechdach haben, wurden durch die starken Winde abgedeckt und teilweise stark beschädigt. Die einfachen, traditionell mit Gras gedeckten Massaihütten schienen den starken Windböen und den sintflutartigen Regenmengen weniger Angriffsfläche zu bieten und hielten diesem Unwetter offensichtlich besser stand. Im Dorf Loiborsoit wirbelten überall Wellblechteile und ganze Dachkonstruktionen durch die Luft. Wie durch ein Wunder wurden dabei keine Menschen ernsthaft verletzt. Die relativ lang anhaltenden Hagelschauer, mit teils weit über 2 cm grossen Hagelkörnern, richteten auch an vielen Maisfeldern erhebliche Schäden an. Viele Leitungsmasten der neuen Stromleitung zwischen Lolkisale und Sukro fielen in der Nähe von Loiborsoit wegen den orkanartigen Windböen oder wegen den auf die Leitungen gestürzten Bäumen um. Die nördlichen Ortsteile Nyorrit, Loolosesia und Lemooti sowie auch die südlichen Ortsteile und das Dorf Emboret waren vom Unwetter weniger stark betroffen. Glücklicherweise sind an den Gebäuden der Primarschule in Loiborsoit und an unseren neu gebauten Schulen in Ormotroo und Mbuko keine, oder nur sehr geringe Schäden entstanden. Solche extreme Wetterereignisse sind von den Massai in der Steppe bis lang erst selten, und noch nie in diesem Ausmass beobachtet worden. Vor allem die extreme Hagelmenge, welche ganze Teile der Steppe während länger als einer Stunde mit einem weissen Kleid bedeckte, erweckte bei den Massai den Eindruck, dass es bei ihnen nun wirklich das erste Mal geschneit hätte! Gestern Freitag und auch heute Samstag ist man überall im Dorf Loiborsoit mit Aufräumen beschäftigt. Auch am Hauptsitz von ENKAINA-E-RETOTO, nicht weit vom Dorfzentrum Loiborsoit, hat das Unwetter Schäden angerichtet. Einige der Bäume sind umgestürzt und 2 Solarpanels sind wegen den starken Böen vom Gebäudedach gerissen und beschädigt worden. Im Moment haben wir daher in unserem Gästehaus keinen elektrischen Strom. Im grossen Ganzen sind wir jedoch mit einem blauen Auge davon gekommen. Am Gebäudedach sind glücklicherweise keine gravierenden Schäden entstanden. Nur einige Dachrinnen wurden abgerissen. Diese materiellen Schäden lassen sich reparieren. In naher Zukunft müssen wir uns wegen der Klimaveränderung leider auch hier im Massailand vermutlich auf das vermehrte Auftreten von extremen Wetterereignissen gefasst machen…
Storm event in Loiborsoit
On Thursday evening, an extraordinary storm raged not far from the village center of Loiborsoit and its vicinity. This was accompanied by squalls, heavy rain and hail, which left a trail of destruction behind. Countless trees, including larger ones, broke or were completely uprooted. A number of houses, which only have a simple, unstable tin roof, were also uncovered by the strong winds and in some cases severely damaged. The simple Maasai huts, traditionally thatched with grass, seemed less vulnerable to the strong gusts of wind and torrential downpours and were obviously better able to withstand the storm. In the village of Loiborsoit, parts of corrugated iron and entire roof constructions whirled through the air. Miraculously, no one was seriously injured. The relatively long-lasting hailstorms, some with hailstones well over 2 cm in size, also caused considerable damage to corn fields. Many pylons of the new power line between Lolkisale and Sukro fell near Loiborsoit because of gusts or because of trees that fell on the lines. The northern hamlets of Nyorrit, Loolosesia and Lemooti, as well as the southern hamlets and the village of Emboret, were less affected by the storm. Fortunately, there was little or no damage to the buildings of the primary school in Loiborsoit and to our newly built schools in Ormotroo and Mbuko. Such extreme weather events have only rarely been observed by the Maasai in the steppe and have never been observed on this scale. Above all, the extreme amount of hail, which covered entire parts of the steppe with a white dress for more than an hour, gave the Maasai the impression that it really had snowed for the first time! Yesterday Friday and also today Saturday everyone in the village of Loiborsoit is busy cleaning up. The storm also caused damage to the headquarters of ENKAINA-E-RETOTO, not far from the village center of Loiborsoit. Some of the trees have fallen and two solar panels have been torn off the roof of the building and damaged due to the strong gusts. At the moment we therefore have no electricity in our guest house. On the whole, however, we got off lightly. Fortunately, there was no serious damage to the roof of the building. Only a few gutters were torn off. This material damage can be repaired. In the near future, due to climate change, we will probably have to prepare for the increased occurrence of extreme weather events here in Maasailand…
Tukio la dhoruba kali huko Loiborsoit
Siku ya Alhamisi jioni, dhoruba isiyo ya kawaida ilipiga si mbali na kituo cha kijiji cha Loiborsoit. Hii iliambatana na, mvua kubwa ya mawe, ambayo iliharibifu nyumba. Miti n.k. Baadhi ya miti imeanguka na paneli mbili za sola zimeezuliwa paa la jengo hilo na kuharibika kutokana na upepo mkali. Kwa sasa hatuna umeme katika nyumba yetu ya wageni.
